In der Videoinstallation im Foyer des neuen NamLabs in Dresden interpretiert der Künstler Philipp Geist künstlerisch technische Prozesse und Themen. Am Computer lässt er malerische, abstrakte Bilderwelten entstehen, die auf organisch-mikroskopische Strukturen und physikalische Prozesse verweisen. Durch ihre Tiefe und Dreidimensionalität symbolisiert die Arbeit den sich ständig erweiternden Raum und die Möglichkeiten der Technik, und stellt durch ihre Vielschichtigkeit und Dichte die komplexen Netzwerke innerhalb der Forschung dar. Geometrische, räumliche Formen wie Quadrate, Kuben, durchbrochene Flächen, Linien und Strahlen überlagern sich in einem kontinuierlichen Prozess, bauen ein Gesamtbild auf, um dieses im nächsten Moment wieder aufzulösen, und lassen eine komplexe Bildarchitektur entstehen, die ständig im Fluss ist. So erreicht diese Arbeit eine Visualisierung des abstrakten Begriffes der Technik bzw. Technologie und deren ständige Weiterentwicklung.
Die Anordnung der fünf 50“ großen Plasmabildschirme, die fünf jeweils 10 Minuten lange unterschiedliche Animationen als Loop zeigen, greifen die Architektur des Foyers auf und bereichern den Neubau durch eine weitere ästhetische Komponente.

1) How important are the years you spent doing photography and painting for your present videoart?
My work as a painter and photographer is very important for my current videoworks. I have been working in three mediums so far. My paintings, photos and videoworks are connected with each other. They are based on one way of seeing and they inspire by one another. I started with photography at the age of 13. At 18 i started to paint and later i got into videowork.
2) What is the origin of your work? For example, “Time Lines”? Did you study the architecture of palace in rome before, or did you work with photographs, pictures, computergrafic models?
For my installation "Time Lines" I worked with a building file of the palazzo delle esposizioni. So I was able to develop the movies especially for the palazzo delle esposizioni. It's very site-specific. It's always very important to me to make kind of a dialogue with the architecture and the building. I also came to rome to get a closer look at the palazzo delle esposizioni a couple of weeks before the installation started.
3) Which kind of relationship does exist in your opera between image and sound?
I basically focused on my videoworks, but the choice of music also played an important role. For the installation I chose contemporary electronic ambient music. It fits very well to the concept of my "Time Lines" installation, because it represents one of its contemporary aspects. Fragments of antique sculptures and ancient buildings are combined with contemporary sounds.
4) What do you believe is specific in your video installations? What is your “signature”?
It's hard for an artist to describe his or her own work. But i guess my signature is the specific use of colours, of blurring and abstractions . The compositions are often very poetic and subtle. I like to do different projects, for example live visual performances with musicians or projections on buildings.
5) Through your works, do you prefer to surprise your audience or stimulate conceptual meditations? – It seems to me that you are interested mostly in the people's emotions -
The emotions of the audience are very important. When the audience is touched by an art work , it's great! It makes the people think about it. I guess that creating emotions is a very important effect art has on the audience. The palazzo has temporarily got a new face, and maybe some onlookers during the notte bianca will have a new feeling about the building when they pass it in the future.
6) You have represented your works in many different countries. Did you remark any difference in people's feedback in the different places (for example Chile and Canada, Spain and Germany…)?
Maybe there are differences, but the visitors` reactions primarily depend on the work and on the place where my art is shown. As I have done many different kinds of projects, the situations and the audiences vary. In clubs the audience
does usually not concentrate very much on the work itself, but are distracted by many different experiences. In art places, galleries and museums the audience usually takes more time to experience the work and is also more focused.
7) What are your future projects?
I'm working on an ongoing project called Riverine. It's a water-video-installation. Currently it will be shown in amsterdam as a 12 channel video-installation. I had exhibited this work in a site-specific way in chicago, munich, berlin, amsterdam, dresden,... In rome I filmed the tevere (tiber) as well. Hopefully I can exhibit and develop this project in italia soon.

Riverine - Water-Video-Installation

In his video-room installation "Riverine Zones Connected", multimedia artist Philipp Geist displays video recordings and video stills from national and international rivers. Using underwater video cameras, Geist has filmed our immediate but simultaneously far-off reality beneath the surface. He creates images that are blurred, abstract, naturalistic, colourful or monochrome. Whether the recordings of urban rivers, small brooks, and vast rivers, which are always shown in equal proportion, are presented as video projection or on video monitors, and are supplemented with videostills, depends on the spatial conditions in place. By making visible garbage on the ground, drying out riverbeds and water pollution the art work confronts the visitor with ecological topics in a subtle and unusual way.
Some weeks ago I developed a multichannel installation with illustrations by Gustave Doré from 1866. He illustrated the epic poem "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. It's a kind of "video-remix" of the wonderful illustrations by Doré. It's part of the Illustrative exhibition in berlin and paris.
8) What did you think about your future job when you were a little boy? Which were your expectations?
As a child I wanted to have a fishing store. Then I wanted to be a nature photographer and then I wanted to be an artist. well, and here I am.

For his Video Installation TIME LINES in Rome, the Berlin-based artist Philipp Geist (born 1976) deliberately avoids the use of canvases and instead projects directly onto the concrete building façades of Plazzo delle Esposizioni. On 7th/ 8th of September, visitors can expect to see a selection of images alternating between purist, dreamlike and intangibly fragile compositions. The starting foundation for all of Philipp Geist's work is video material solely filmed and produced by himself.
Philipp Geist filmed ancient art objects, as for example statues, antique sculptures, busts, paintings, gold decoration and mosaics in Rome and Berlin, from unusual perspectives. Geist used modern digital techniques (hard- and software) to manipulate the filmed images by abstracting, recolouring and overlaying them. Elements of the art pieces are seperated from their context and arranged in new picture variants and artistic compositions. In the video installation art pieces from same and different epochs are combined. The projected moving images can be seen only on smooth surfaces in a clear and unbroken way. This fragmentary effect refers to the partial, only incompletely preserved antique art objects, and thus develops a symbiosis between the projection wall and the video art. An interaction emerges between the antique works and the contemporary, digital medium videoart on the architecture and the spectators, which both serve as projection ground.
By opting to use the three-dimensional, defined structure contours as projection surfaces instead of canvases, Geist increases the motifs abstraction while simultaneously regaining depth and diversity. In this way, Geist initiates a dialogue between the historically architecture, his artistic work and the people going in and out of the structure: The visitor himself becomes part of the projected image on the threshold between the inside and outside of the building.
The visitors make a time journey within picture worlds, which range from antiquity to the digital age.

"Paradise Lost" Video-Installation von Philipp Geist zu Gustave Dorés Illustrationen bei Illustrative Berlin 2007
Die ILLUSTRATIVE BERLIN 07 ist die führende Ausstellung für zeitgenössische Illustration und Grafik.
Vom 31. August bis zum 16. September 2007 zeigt die Illustrative in Berlin mit über 200 Arbeiten eine Werkschau der renommiertesten Illustratoren und Grafiker. Die ILLUSTRATIVE PARIS 07, die vom 26. November bis zum 9. Dezember stattfindet, ist die französische Schwesterveranstaltung der ILLUSTRATIVE BERLIN. Sie ist ein neues dezentrales Kunstfestival in der französischen Metropole, das die Ausstellung der ILLUSTRATIVE mit zahlreichen Sonderpräsentationen verbindet.

PARADISE LOST
Video - Installation von Philipp Geist zu Gustave Dorés Illustrationen
Der Berliner Künstler Philipp Geist zeigt auf der Illustrative eine Videokunst-Installation, in welcher er Holzstiche von Gustave Doré (1832–1883) neu interpretiert. Doré ist bekannt für seine Bibel-Illustrationen und die Bebilderung zahlreicher Werke der Weltliteratur, unter anderem Dante’s Göttliche Komödie.
Geist wählte für sein Projekt Illustrationen, die Doré im Jahre 1866 zu John Miltons epischen Gedicht „Paradise Lost“ aus dem Jahre 1666 anfertigte. Die Holzschnitte bestechen durch ihre perfekt ausgearbeiteten Lichtsituationen, die Genauigkeit, Detailtreue und dynamische Linienführung. Auf der einen Seite sind sie von Kitsch und Pathos geprägt und machen daher einen altmodischen Eindruck auf den zeitgenössischen Betrachter, auf der anderen Seite haben die Stiche durch ihre cineastische, dramatische Qualität eine geradezu moderne Anmutung. Denn neben einer nur in Ansätzen naturalistischen Abbildung, die dazu dient, den Wahrheitsgehalt der Paradiesgeschichte zu bestätigen, schien es Doré’s Hauptanliegen zu sein, die Dramatik der Ereignisse zu vermitteln und somit das Dargestellte zu erhöhen. Die Erhabenheit der biblischen Geschichte über die Vertreibung von Adam und Eva aus dem Paradies sind geprägt von romantischen Naturdarstellungen, von einem Lichtspiel, das das Auge des Betrachters leitet, und gleichzeitig von szenischen Kompositionen, die in ihrer Ausgestaltung und Detailreichtum einen realistischen Effekt haben und an Filmsets von Monumentalfilmen erinnern.
Diese Vorwegnahme des bewegten Bildes durch die Doré-Stiche und die Spannung zwischen Realismus/Naturalismus und dramatischen Effekten thematisiert Geist in vielfältiger Weise, stellt sie heraus und gleichzeitig in Frage. Betrachtet man die Stiche von nahem, wirkt die enge Linienführung wie ein Fernsehbild, das aus Halbbildern besteht. Geist führt diese Assoziation weiter und ersetzt Teile des Bildes mit gefilmtem Material und Naturaufnahmen.
In seiner Multi-Channel-Video-Installation interpretiert Geist die Doré-Stiche aber nicht nur durch die Montage von selbst gefilmten Naturaufnahmen, die dem Bild eine realistisch-naturalistische Wirkung verleihen und somit unseren von Kino und Fernsehen geprägten Sehgewohnheiten entsprechen. Er koloriert Stiche mit kräftigen Farben und lässt Passagen in ihrer ursprünglichen schwarz-weißen Farbgebung bestehen. An anderen Stellen isoliert er Figuren und zeigt sie vor einem schwarzen Hintergrund. Die szenische, realistische Wirkung der Stiche wird gestört, indem durch die vorgenommene Reduktion der ursprüngliche Überfluss an Details der Stiche noch deutlicher gemacht wird. Die Figuren werden ausgeschnitten und eine Fokussierung auf die unmittelbare Beziehung zwischen den Figuren wird erreicht, ohne dass die Aufmerksamkeit des Betrachters durch Details abgelenkt wird. Die Protagonisten im paradiesischen Drama werden ein- und ausgeblendet, und durch langsame Fahrten über die Stiche aus ihrem Kontext und ihrer festen Platzierung gerissen. Teile eines Bildes werden überlagert. Die so erreichte Abstraktion und die Überhöhung der Kontraste und Konturen verfremden die Inhalte bisweilen so sehr, dass man sie nur noch schemenhaft und als Strukturen erkennen kann.
Das Medium „Buch“, welches im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts durch immer günstiger werdende Herstellungsmöglichkeiten Texte und Bilder weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung zugänglich machen konnte, wird übersetzt in eine andere, neuere Darstellungsmöglichkeit, mit der man seit dem 20. Jahrhundert ein Massenpublikum erreicht: den Bildschirm. Die Verbindung zwischen den beiden Medien wird nicht zuletzt dadurch hergestellt, dass der Künstler die kleinen Monitore in einem ungewöhnlichen Hochkant-Format gruppiert. So wird auf die Buchseiten, auf welchen die ursprünglichen Illustrationen erschienen, verwiesen, und gleichzeitig gehen die Holzstiche aus dem 19. Jahrhundert auf eine Zeitreise in das multimediale Zeitalter.
Philipp Geist thematisiert die realistische und gleichzeitig romantisch-dramatische Wirkung der Doré-Stiche und stellt eine Vielzahl von Bezügen her zwischen der analogen Kunstform der Illustration einerseits und modernen visuellen Medien wie dem Kino und dem Fernsehen andererseits.

The international Festival CAMP (Creative Arts and Music Project) is an innovative forum and interactive laboratory for soundartists, musicians as well as for artists dealing with video, installation, projections and the new media. It is characteristically marked by experimental and electronic music in convergence with visual disciplines. For several days a selected group of artists, who belong to the international avantgarde in their field, work in a "laboratory of time" on audio - visual projects which will be presented to the public at the final performances.

In dem Video zu dem Song "ON TUESDAYS I´M NOT AS YOUNG" arbeite ich mit verschiedenen Ebenen und Überlagerungen. Es ist ein künstlerisches abstraktes Phillip Boa Musikvideo mit teils kräftigen Farben.
Dabei werden Aufnahmen von Phillip Boa und von von Pia Lund einzeln und zusammen übereinander gelegt, um so eine Mehrdimensionalität und Tiefe zu erreichen.
Die Aufnahmen wurden aus verschiedenen Perspektiven mit zwei Kameras aufgenommen. Die Gesichter von Boa und Lund sind dabei nur schemenhaft zu erkennen.
Das grafische Raster des Hintergrundes wird zu einem abstrakten dichten Geflecht aus Linien und Strukturen."

| Derzeit ist eine Weiterführung der Installation in folgenden Städten geplant: Im April 2007 wird das Projekt in Chicago in der Three Walls Gallery gezeigt werden. Die Ausstellung in Chicago wird von dem Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IFA) gefördert. Danach wandert die Ausstellung im September 2007 nach Amsterdam, wo sie 4 Wochen lang im club11 als 12 Multichannel Videoinstallation gezeigt wird. Im nächsten Jahr 2008 wird dann das Projekt nach Bayern wandern und ein Teil einer großen Einzelausstellung in einem historischen Eiskeller im historischen Klosterdorf Polling sein. | |
