For his work in Bucharest, the Berlin-based artist projects directly onto the trees, fog and screens. On four days visitors can expect to see a selection of images alternating between purist, dreamlike and intangibly fragile compositions. The starting foundation for all of Philipp Geist's work is video material solely filmed and produced by himself. Geist finds the subjects for his work in everyday things like structures, leaves, raindrops and curtains. He releases these objects from their usual setting and places them in new visual and correlated contexts by employing special camera and video techniques using motion blur and superimposition.
For his installation in Bucharest (Craciun la Obor), Philipp Geist went in search of wintry, Christmasy motifs which attempt to break the link to consumption and indulgence, and instead direct visitors’ attention toward the pure aesthetic component that is all too often obscured by the kitschy madness of Christmas.
It is in this way that a ride along the highly commercialized Oxford Street in London takes on a completely new appearance as it is seen through a window pane. Distorted by the raindrops at night, it allows viewers only a vague impression of the twinkling Christmas lights. Microscopic close-ups give sparklers, burned down candles and snowflakes an element of diversity that would have remained unappreciated by the human eye without the aid of technology.
By opting to use the three-dimensional, defined structure contours as projection surfaces, Geist increases the motifs’ abstraction while simultaneously regaining depth and diversity. In this way, Geist initiates a dialogue between the space and surrounding, his artistic work and the people going in and out of the structure: The visitor himself becomes part of the projected image.
Geist allows a wintry world to emerge in front of visitors’ eyes. The subject matter and motifs, although familiar, astonish with their size and unusual presentation while altering the observer’s perception and challenging conventional viewing habits.
One thing is for certain: Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a tranquil, wintry, dreamlike world of lights.

Philipp Geist

As an artist and autodidact, he has gained an international reputation with the mediums video installation, audio/ visual performance, painting and photography. Philipp Geist

His ambitious video presentations have been presented, among others, at the reopening of the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, in 2002; the Palazzo delle Espozioni in Rome in 2007; the Berlin Kulturforum in 2008; in group exhibitions such as Times and Places at the Neues Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop and Transcities in Bucharest, both in 2008. He recently presented a solo exhibition, Lighting Times, at the Weilheimer Stadtmuseum.
Philipp Geist’s projects and works are characterized by their complexity and the integration of the location, the sound and moving images.
Nicole Gingras
Nicole Gingras is a writer and independent curator. She lives in Montreal. She has since 1985 curated film and video programs, as well as solo and group exhibitions, that have toured Canada and Europe. She also works on her own projects, such as the publishing house Éditions Nicole Gingras founded in 1996. Her interest for image and sound materializes in numerous exhibitions, programmes, publications, comments and essays published in various magazines, exhibition catalogues and anthologies. In 2005 she received the first Joan-Yvonne-Lowndes award given to a Canadian independent curator for meritorious achievement in her curatorial and writing practice. She was invited by the Goethe-Institut to curate a series of exhibitions entitled Listening to See within the interdisciplinary event Noise and Silence 2008-2009.

Newsletter September 2008
Hallo,
auch in diesem Newsletter moechte ich einen Rueck- und Ausblick auf die kommenden Ausstellungen und Projekte geben.
Im Juli nahm ich an dem internationalen Symposium und an der anschließenden Gruppenausstellung "Wasser und Wein" in der Staedtischen Galerie 'Leerer Beutel' teil. In einer Einzelausstellung im kleinen Projektraum in der Ostengasse 7 in Regensburg zeigte ich mein Wasserprojekt Riverine Zones Connected, welches ich vor Ort weiterentwickelte, indem ich die Donau unter Wasser filmte und in die Installation integrierte.
I would like to give an overview of my latest and also coming projects. In July, I took part in the international symposium and the accompanying group exhibition "Water and wine" in Regensburg and showed my water project "Riverine Zones Connected" in a solo exhibition in the small project room Ostengasse 7 after including a local perspective by adding the Donau to the existing underwater films of rivers.
